Vic: Opposition calls for rethink on Federation Square name

The Victorian opposition has called for a rethink on the name of Melbourne's Federation Square.

Deputy opposition leader LOUISE ASHER says the precinct should be renamed Yarra Square.

She says the name, Federation, is no longer relevant because it won't be completed
this year, the centenary of federation.

The project, which is likely to cost about $338 million after it was originally expected
to cost $128 million when announced in 1997, is expected to be completed in 2002.

Ms ASHER says the failure to complete the project in 2001 has been a lost opportunity
for Victoria and she wants the government to take submissions from people for another
name.
