NT: Five arrested in marijuana rally
Five marijuana enthusiasts have been arrested in Darwin today -- even though they saythe three-foot joint they rolled for their protest was made only of legal herbs.
A melee developed after more than 100 people gathered in Darwin's Raintree Park thisafternoon to protest against the proposed toughening of Northern Territory drug laws.
While their giant joint was said to be purely symbolic -- observers say many demonstratorsappeared to be passing around real joints despite a heavy police presence.
Network Against Prohibition spokesman GARY MYERHOFF was the first to be arrested --with police planning to charge him with refusing to obey a directive to leave the park.
Another three protesters were arrested in the melee as more than a dozen police wrestledMr MYERHOFF into a police van.
Police say a quantity of leafy material was seized and one man will be charged withpossession of cannabis.
They say there may also be other resist arrest, disorderly behaviour, assault and drug-relatedcharges laid after the protest.
