NSW: $100 mill to ensure viability of welfare services
The NSW Government is to provide an extra $100 million to fund wage rises for low paidcommunity workers.
The welfare sector has applauded, saying the government's ensured the viability ofmany organisations.
The pay issue has been the subject of argument between the CARR and HOWARD governments, with federal authorities not agreeing to pay their share of the wage rise.
New South Wales Community Services Minister CARMEL TEBBUTT says NSW is now coveringthe entire cost.
She says many welfare organisations were facing cutbacks or closure because they couldn'tafford the wage increases.
ALAN KIRKLAND from the state Council of Social Service says the payment is historic-- but NSW taxpayers should be angry that the state government is meeting the federalgovernment's responsibility.
Federal Family and Community Services Minister AMANDA VANSTONE says the Commonwealthhasn't been responsible for the relevant services since 1992.
