Coca-Cola Invites People Worldwide to Share Messages of Hope for Children in Need; People From 100 Countries Join an Internet Unity Chain.

Coca-Cola to Donate $1 For Each Person Who Joins Chain to U.S. Fund for UNICEF

NEW YORK, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 3,500 people from 100 countries have joined an online Unity Chain that offers people worldwide the opportunity to share their personal messages of hope and optimism, and add themselves to a virtual human chain that will encircle the globe. For each person who joins the chain, Coca-Cola will donate $1 to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, up to $100,000.

To join the Unity Chain and help the world's children, please go to: http://www.unity.coca-cola.com/. Visitors to the site can email an invitation to join the chain to their friends and family. Traffic to the site has been generated solely by word of mouth as people have passed the link along to their loved ones.

"We encourage people to join the Coca-Cola Unity Chain and connect with others who share in our hope for a world fit for children," said Charles J. Lyons, President of U.S. Fund for UNICEF. "With a simple click of a mouse, each person can make a difference and help UNICEF's global programs for children."

Here are some examples of how UNICEF can make a difference with just $1: -- $1 can protect four children against measles. Measles, the world's fourth biggest child killer, claims more children's lives each year than wars, famines and natural disasters combined. -- $1 buys enough vitamin A capsules to protect 25 children against blindness. -- $1 can buy 10 packets of oral rehydration salts (ORS) to treat children suffering from diarrheal dehydration, a leading killer of children. -- $1 buys enough polio vaccines for two children. Once at epidemic proportions in the United States claiming some 50,000 victims annually in the 1950s, today polio still strikes children in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
